Convergence Training updates its Asbestos Awareness program August 25, 2009

Asbestos_Awareness_TrainingAsbestos is a naturally formed mineral fiber that is tough, heat, and electricity resistant. It is an incombustible material once used in the construction of buildings, homes, and appliances. It was widely used in construction products due to its heat resistance, poor conductive ability, sound absorption capability and high tensile strength. The use of Asbestos can be dated back to the Ancient Greeks, they wove it into clothing for the slaves, funeral attire for the cremation of kings, made table linens, and wicks for light. Asbestos became widely used in the US for building construction materials and other products like acoustic insulator, thermal insulation, fire proofing, roofing, flooring and other materials during the 19th century. Diseases such as Mesothelioma and Asbestosis can be contributed to Asbestos exposure; as well as other illnesses.

Asbestos containing materials were used extensively in the construction of homes and businesses during 50’s and throughout the 70’s. If in good condition, and left alone, Asbestos poses less of a health risk than removing it. Friable product, such as, insulation containing asbestos cause the biggest concern, because of the soft and weak structure, the material can break with the slightest application of pressure. Once disturbed, it releases the fibers into the air allowing the inhalation into the lungs. Removal of Asbestos contained materials is a delicate process, it requires extra care from a Asbestos Professional.

Mesotheliona, Asbestosis, and malignant Lung Cancer form after an individual has inhaled the Asbestos fibers. Long-term exposure is more likely to cause the diseases, than ambient low levels in the air, or one time contact, but each person’s body will react differently. Some reported cases took years, but a number of cases do involve second hand exposure by indirect contact with material. The fibers from broken or damaged material settle on clothing and tools, which is the leading cause of indirect contamination. Because of the staggering number of Asbestos related illnesses and deaths, many countries have banned the use of Asbestos.
