Forklifts are a valuable asset to any company. They help move heavy materials from place to place quickly, they help store supplies high above ground level more efficiently than by hand. Most industries have several forklifts, electric pallet jacks, or other types of trucks operating at one time; to be more productive and to help manage time. OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.178 holds employers responsible for ensuring that all of their lift truck operators, regardless of his or her experience. Each employee who will be responsible for operating the forklift must be provided with training, be evaluated and certified in lift truck use and operation. If a company is found in violation, they could face fines of up to $7,000 per untrained operator. The fines for uncertified drivers are so high because the risk of death and injuries involved with the operation of the machine, most of the forklift related accidents reported last year in
the US occurred because of human error and inattentiveness. The total cost paid out was in the billions for legal issues, medical bills and fines because of these accidents.
