The FMLA of 1993 entitles employees to take up to 26 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period for specified family, medical, and military-related reasons. The law applies to private-sector employers with 50 or more employees who worked at least 20 workweeks in the current or preceding calendar year. It also applies to all public employers, no matter how many employees.
