WHMIS Right to Know by Digital 2000 August 1, 2010
Under the WHMIS legislation, workers have the right to know about workplace hazardous materials and to receive effective training that can help them to work safely. WHMIS requires all suppliers, including manufacturers, packagers, processors and importers, to label all their product containers and prepare Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s) for each of their products according to the hazard criteria given in the Controlled Product Regulations under the federal Hazardous Products Act.
All employers must ensure that the products used in the workplace are adequately labeled and that their MSDS are available before they are handled by employees. Employers are also required under the system to design worker education programs that enable the workers to know about the significance of labels and MSDSs and how to work safely with hazardous materials.
