Overview
An accident is an unplanned incident in the workplace that results in injury, illness and/or property damage or the probability thereof. In some cases, this means close calls - near accidents in which no one is hurt. As the person responsible for your company’s safety program, you probably spend much of your time working to avoid these types of incidents in your workplace. But on occasion, they still happen. When they do, it’s important to find out why they occurred so you can learn how to avoid similar occurrences in the future. Accident investigation is the process that can help you determine what factors contributed to and caused a given accident. Using this information, you can take corrective action to make sure a similar accident doesn’t happen again. Combined with safety inspections, hazard awareness training, hazard analysis and regular safety and health reviews with employees, accident investigation can help you make the workplace safer and more productive. The Blueprints for Safety© Accident Investigation Program is designed to provide a step-by-step approach to creating an accident investigation program for your company. This program will help you establish a process for investigating accidents and training managers, supervisors and/or team leaders to understand and use that process when accidents occur in the workplace. The outcomes of your accident investigation program will be as follow: Creating and implementing an accident investigation program has several important benefits. Using such a program, you can recognize future problems in the workplace before they become accidents, control the costs associated with such accidents and increase everyone’s safety.
No workplace is exempt from accidents. And since you can’t guarantee an accident will never take place in your workplace, it is important to know how to properly handle accidents when they occur.
